Another set of metaphysical oppositions that organizes and orders things, helping us to make sense of ourselves and our world, is that which divides and differentiates between original and copy, innovative and derived, or unique and reproduced. And as was the case with the deconstruction of the real, these conceptual pairings arrange unequal hierarchies, where the first term of each pair has ontological and axiological privilege and precedence. The original Mona Lisa, which hangs on the walls of the Louvre in Paris, is a priceless and unique artwork protected by alarm systems and armed guards. The insurance value of the painting—the highest ever recorded—is currently estimated to be $850 million U.S. dollars. Meanwhile numerous reproductions of the original work are sold in the museum book store for just a few Euros. Likewise, you can book an Elvis impersonator for your next backyard party, and they will entertain you and your guests with an imitation of something that approximates what it might have been like to have seen the actual Elvis Presley in concert. And when you purchase supplies for the event with cash, especially if you pay in large bills, the clerk will carefully examine the piece of paper to ensure that it is a genuine $100 bill and not a counterfeit reproduction.
